Through history, our survival and progress has been tied to our abilities to perceive, imagine, and transform the environment around us.
These abilities have been increasingly related to the intelligent use of images, symbols and numbers. The better the representations and manipulations we have, the better we can understand, create and manage resources, as we want them, when we want them.
Key concepts supporting our effective perception, imagination, and transformation of the environment are counting and measurement.
Counting is the identification of discrete, consecutive “unit” items, all seen as of “the same nature and size”, and as part of a group. Measurement is a statement of count for the size of an object, a group, or an action.
